Things to smile about

Sometimes I just need to sit back and think about the good things, the things to smile about.

1.  Getting a new job on a Monday, makes it not such a bad day after all and a great start to the week/month!
2.  Spending the weekend turning your closet from this:

to this:

plus all this to go to the Goodwill (4 bags of clothes and 1 bag of shoes!):

3.  Sitting outside on a Saturday night in 80 degrees and watching a concert where the headliner played for 2 hours

4.  Learning that mom and dad will be coming for a visit in October for 1 week+.
5. Going to the store and buy 2 sweaters, 1 tank top and 1 scarf for your self and 1 sweater for your husband and only spend $50 for all of it.
6.  or when I order a shirt just to get my order over $50 for free shipping and absolutely loving it when it gets here.

7. taking a Friday off so I can have a 4-day weekend, just because!  Today is my 'Friday'!

Hope everyone is have a great week.  Happy September!

    Dear (Shoe-Shopping) Stores

    Dear (Shoe-Shopping) Stores,

We haven't formally met, but I'm Lauren.  To tell you a little bit about me, I don't pay full price and I'm a lot little picky.  I am a visual person and would prefer to go try things on in the store before I purchase them.  To speed up the process, I sometimes peruse your website to see what you have and if there's something that I might like.  Now, I am rather appreciative that you actually have a website that shares your merchandise, so please don't get my wrong there.

I have been perusing for a while today and came across some shoes which I love and MUST HAVE.  I was excited because my sister and I, we're going shopping tonight!  Then I see it, two ugly little words:  "Online Only".   But, but, but no, I want need them, I have to have them!!

I already went through this once with a different chain and I visited 3 of their stores (that's right 3 of them) to find the ever elusive sandals that were the object of my affection, but they didn't have a single pair, anywhere.  I loved these babies, but they were no where to be found.  I haven't gone back there since.

I'm not sure you understand what it's like for a flip-flop only kinda girl like me to finally find a pair of sandals that I want.  I know I'm picky, but I can't help it.  Can you please just help a girl out just one time.  I mean really, what did I ever do to you.

Please don't stop posting items to your site, but I would appreciate if you could have like an "Online Only" section so that I don't have to get my hopes up for my shopping trip (like Old Navy does).

    Sincerely,
    shoe/online shopper at your store

    Makeover finished!

So if you remember, about 2 months ago, I blogged about making over our living room and dining room.  I'm happy to report that we're finished!

I'm also happy to report that we stayed with the striped chair and are very glad that we did, it looks great!

I'll save the talking for later, have a look at some pictures first!

(Sorry about the coke on the chair and other boxes, shopping at BJ's makes it hard to store bulk!)

I would post links to furniture etc, but for the couch and chair and the dining room table, I did not have a good experience with either company so I would rather not, if you want to know where I got anything specifically, let me know.

This room is definitely much more my style!  We quickly got everything painted and then played the waiting game for the furniture (couch & chair).  Once we had that, we struggled to find end tables and then curtains.  It felt like it took forever to finally find everything and get it set up, but I finished before M came, which was my goal.

It's such a clean and bright look.  I'm now happy to go into these rooms!  Some of my favorite things in the rooms are the wine cork holder in the dining room (we got it in Savannah) and our cake topper in the living room on the shelves (from Paul Pape Designs).  Unfortunately I didn't get a close enough picture to share this time.  The ottomans are great and hold our board games and decks of cards.  Hopefully we'll get more use out of them now.

I am still looking for a few decorations to go on the shelves and end tables, but for now I'm satisfied with how it turned out and I hope we will sit in there and enjoy it a little more.

    Have a great weekend!

Living Room Makeover - Search for furniture

There are only 2 rooms in the house that we haven't painted yet, the Living Room and the Dining Room.  Since they are adjoining, they need some sort of coordination in my opinion.  The problem is with the way the rooms are setup.  The Living Room as 2 big doorways (1 to the dining room and 1 to the hallway) on 2 walls, and 1 wall is a big window, leaving us with 1 plain wall to work with.  We've had a sofa against it and a chair in another corner and we'll keep the same look.  The current furniture though, is just not my style, it's much more 'cushiony' then I like.  There is nothing about this room that screams 'Lauren's style'!  It was just everything that came from the apartment that didn't fit elsewhere.  Since we weren't sure what we were going to do with the room we just put the stuff in there for now.

    Personal Photo

It's now 3 years later and it's time for a makeover.  Last weekend we tackled the task of finding a new sofa and chair for our living room.  I should mention, that I am picky!  I don't like to put it that way though, I just like to say that I know what I want and what I don't want.  That sounds much better.  We started with looking for a patterned chair.  If you remember from my clothes post, I tend to stick to solid colors and no patterns, and the same falls true for decorating my house.  I was determined we were going to get some sort of pattern in that room.  We started with a trip to Target where I had seen some patterned chairs that I liked there.  In the store we saw this chair and decided that we were going to get this one:

The real task was finding a sofa and chair for the room.  There is one main street that has a minimum of like 6 furniture stores, no lie.  We visited a few of them but nothing was really what I wanted.

Some were too light, too 'cushiony', and not clean enough lines.  For some, friends had bad experiences with their furniture sagging.  Some were too expensive and one store I refuse to visit after 2 bad customer service experiences with them.

    The top contenders:

It was a trying day.  (Did I mention that I'm picky?)  I decided to search online, on my phone, while we traveled between stores and I came upon this chair at Target.

I loved it. We hadn't purchased the original chair yet and I was glad, this one changed my mind.  I definitely wanted this one instead.  Now only if I could find a sofa.  Suddenly I remembered that JCPenny has furniture in some of their stores and online.  That's when I found this beauty from the Napa collection:

    and its matching chair:

They fit all of my criteria.  I was skeptical about ordering them because I hadn't actually seen them in person.  We made our way to one of the larger local JCPenny stores but they didn't have any in stock.  In the end, after much deliberation, we took the plunge and ordered them (in a lighter color).  Despite the high delivery fee ($225, Yikes!) and the fact that we hadn't seen them yet they fit all of our (my) criteria and we both liked them.  Now we're in wait and see mode as it takes 4 weeks for them to arrive! (Enough time to paint the walls,  shampoo the carpets and try to sell the old furniture)

The next day we got online to order from Target because it was 15% off if you spent $125+ and free shipping.  It was definitely cheaper to do that then to purchase in store.  Only one problem, the chair (the bottom one) was out of stock.  So frustrating.  In the end we went with the original choice and ordered the striped chair.  It arrived and it's great, I love it.  Then I was online today, and noticed that the other one has become available again.  Now what do I do?  Order it and return the striped one?  Stick with the striped one?  We didn't have any shipping costs or anything so that's not a problem.  I'm not usually a person to order things I haven't seen.  I hate ordering items online because I want to see them first and make sure the material is nice and that they're going to fit.  I hate bringing things back to the store.  I still haven't decided what to do.

We still had a dilemma of tables.  Looking at the picture of the room as is, a coffee table is too big for such a small space.  I like the 2 Leather Ottomans look on Young House Love (Living Room - Halfway down).  We looked around and ended up ordering two of these from Target.  They arrived, they look nice and I think they will fit in great.  KC has trouble picturing things so I think he's still skeptical.

We'll be spending the weekend painting this weekend.  We're still in search of window treatments and what do to about side end tables (1 on each side of the sofa or just 1 on 1 side).  On the plus side, we did find some 'wall art' for over the couch which tends to be my biggest problem when I'm redoing a room.  Our bedroom went for a year with nothing on the walls, awesome.

Why is decorating so hard?  Has anyone else bought furniture from JCPenny or any other store on-line without seeing it first? I wish I could hire a decorator to do it all for me!

    Ruffles!

Lots of emails have been coming in for Spring fashions and I have been checking them out whenever possible.  I'm usually a pretty plain dresser (as mentioned here) but all these ruffles seem to have caught my attention lately.
    Shoes:

    Target - $12.99

    Cardigans/Tops

    Gap - $34.50

    J.Crew - $29.95

    Bathing Suits

    J. Crew - $44.00

And these are just a few of them, I could post pages of them.  Now if only I'd seen the Gap/Old Navy stuff last weekend when I had a 30% off Friends/Family coupon!

This is definitely one of the more popular trends this summer.  Now, to keep myself away from the mall/internet!

    I've been bit . . .

by the Liberty of London bug.

Yesterday we were heading to the hardware store and I decided I wanted to stop by Target on the way and see the new Liberty of London line I'd been hearing about.  If you remember from this post, patterns are not my thing at all!  I steer clear so I was pretty sure I wasn't going to find anything that I liked in the clothing or home section.  If I liked them, there was no way I was buying them because they just don't fit my normal style.

Well, boy was I wrong.  First thing when we walk in the store, is the Women's clothing line.  The first shirts I see, I love!  I just kept looking at them saying, I can't believe I like these!  I bought them both and I can't wait to wear them.  I do plan to wear a cardigan with each of them to "pare-down" the boldness of one of the patterns.  I have two different cardigans that will go great with each of these tops.

    Here's what I got:

I will say that the key-hole is a little low, but I normally wear something underneath, anyways so that should be fine.  My fashion adviser (my sister) wasn't home when I returned, so I'm anxious to hear what she has to say about them when I get home from work tonight, I'm hoping she doesn't say "take them back, they look terrible!" :-)

I didn't get to see everything they have as this is one of the smaller Targets around town.  Looking at the Target website, there is everything from shirts, dresses, swimsuits, scarves, flip-flops, hats and more in the women's clothing line.  There's a men's and children's line as well.  Bedding, bicycles, Dining, Furniture, Home Decor and so on.

There are so many patterns, these are just a few that I like:

Have you gone to Target and checked it out yet?  Did you like the new line or not?
